Columbus Autoparts
There have been groups formed in Columbus, Ohio, to oppose the building of a casino in the Arena District, as mandated by the results of the November election. Instead, the mayor has been working with Penn National Gaming on other possible sites for their casino.
On Wednesday, lawmakers in the state pushed forward with a ballot measure that, if approved by voters, would move the potential site for a Columbus casino from the Arena District to the former Delphi auto parts plant on the west side of the city.
"Neighborhood and business leaders have rallied in support of the Delphi site," said Representative Ted Celeste, who is pushing for the ballot measure, "Now, we as lawmakers must work together to garner consensus and combine our efforts to provide jobs and help jump-start the local economy."
Penn National prefers to build the casino in the Arena District, but after meeting with the mayor, they have agreed to the Delphi site. Their main concern is that they would like to begin construction of the casino as soon as possible.
That is the goal of lawmakers as well. The casino, along with casinos in Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Toledo, is expected to give a big boost to the economy in Ohio. Thousands of jobs will be created from the casinos.
The next step for the ballot measure Bill will be to be passed in the legislature. The Senate must approve the Bill with at least twenty of thirty-three votes, and in the House sixty-of the ninety-nine members must approve the Bill.
