*Charitable Deduction in 2009 for Haiti Relief Note: The House of Representatives unanimously passed H.R. 4462 on 1/20/10. This legislation would allow individuals who make charitable contributions to victims of the earthquake in Haiti to claim an itemized charitable deduction on their 2009 tax return instead of having to wait until next year to claim these deductions on their 2010 tax return. The legislation also includes a provision allowing those who text messaged a donation the ability to use a phone bill as proof of donation. *In-Kind Donations Note: If you are interested in donating physical items like clothing or supplies, please contact nonprofits that accept in-kind donations like the Salvation Army or Goodwill Industries International. At this time, cash donations are most needed so organizations can purchase the exact supplies necessary for emergency response.
*Adoption Note: As in any disaster of this magnitude, the children who may have been orphaned because of the earthquake would not become available for international adoption for at least 1-2 years to allow time to be reunited with their displaced family members. SOLVING A MYSTERY: The word was “Minamonamyrna” and it surfaced yesterday when we reported on the list of November and December adoptions for A Different Breed.
ADB’s Joni McConnell described it as “in-house slang.”
And now, it will make sense: “We had 3 puppies in the litter, named Mina, Mona and Myrna. Nobody knew who was who.” So, whenever one was adopted, the news was that “someone adopted a Mina/Mona/Myrna today,” she says.

A NEW MALLOY BRIDGE DOG: Deborah Trevino, who has been working on saving and protecting dumped dogs on Mallow Bridge Road in southeast Dallas for quite some time now, tells us that a new dog has appeared and joined Charlie The Uncatchable Dog.
She says that on Sunday afternoon when she drove up to the usual site, “Charlie was asleep on the edge of the high grassy area. He came up for hot dogs. But, I immediately knew something was wrong, because he just looked at the hot dogs and didn't touch them. So, I proceeded to prepare the chicken for him. I noticed he wasn't eating that, either.
“That's when I saw the new boy standing on the edge of the high grassy area. He is injured. His hind left leg has a deep, raw gash ... He's not putting any weight on this leg at all. Plus, he has smaller (road rash) abrasions on his other legs.
“Charlie wouldn't let this boy get to the food, and, in fact, attacked him right in front of me. I yelled at Charlie, and told him to get away. I then took a large piece of chicken meat and approached the boy where he lay from being attacked. He let me get within 2 feet of him, and he ate one large piece of meat. Then, he got up, and hopped off. He wouldn't let me approach him again.”

BE ON THE LOOKOUT: This is Pepper, a heeler mix who is an agility dog. Bronwen Lanning says the dog was last seen Friday evening near FM^ and Cemetery/1138 south of Nevada in eastern Collin County.
“She’s very afraid of gunshots and could have gone quite far to try to ‘escape’ the gunshot noise.”

UPDATE IN BURNS FLAT: Back during the holidays we reported on our Burns Flat., Okla., tipster Terry Lynn Fisher’s concern for a pit named Meat (left).
His family had named him that and Terry Lynn says, “I hate that, so I call him Link. He was thrown away because they got a new dog that does not like him.”
So, she’s hustling to find a way to save Link’s life while also working on find a spot for a pair of Dachshund brothers. They’re losing their home become the family has “five dogs in a 3-dog limit” and has been “told to get rid of two.”
Then there are some that Terry Lynn confesses, “I really do not know what they are. They have these short little legs and mouths like a boxer. ... They are great little guys. The owners moved and just let them loose.”

VOLUNTEER ALERT: As you may know, Friends of the Animals at Cedar Creek Lake operates the world’s most successful spay/neuter clinic in Gun Barrel City. But this clinic isn’t operated without volunteer help. And Friends’ Sydney Busch has issued this call: “We can really use somebody from about 3-6pm on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at the clinic. Chores include keeping the laundry going, cleaning around the coffee area, making cage tags, watching out for the dogs waiting to go home, and just generally helping doing whatever needs doing.”

PIG LOOKING FOR A PAL: The owner of a potbellied pig – a 20-pounder (so far) – became ill and surrendered the pig to Happy Tails of Gun Barrel City. Tina says Happy Tails will “rescue about anything” and lists raccoons, snakes, possums, squirrels, cats and dogs but vows good-naturedly, “I won’t do geese ever again.”
COLLIN COUNTY SITUATION: Our Collin County Animal Services tipster DeDe Whitcomb reports that the facility is overloaded and that “many are scheduled for euthanasia” today. At least one of the Beagles in the shelter is there after being “surrendered due to divorce.”
There are many other dogs that aren’t purebreds. And who knows why they have all wound up in the shelter. But you can bet there’s a human at the core of their problem.

AN HONORED PROGRAM REACHES A DECADE: The SPCA of Texas’s Pet Grief Counseling Program has been helping people for 10 years now. It’s free, open to the public and designed to help relieve grief felt after a beloved animal dies. The monthly sessions are at 1 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month – except that this month, the year’s first session is this Saturday. The meeting is at 1 p.m. at the SPCA at 352 S. TESSA’S CASE: Back around mid-December we reported that Tessa the Chocolate Lab had gone missing from her adoptive home near Troy, Texas. She shortly was found in a junkyard, reported Gail Whelan of Companion Animal Network, the group that had adopted Tessa out. CAN reclaimed Tessa and now she’s looking for a new home. Gail reports, “This is a FABULOUS dog! Anyone interested can speak with the personnel at The Velvet Snout about her. She is great with other dogs and all humans. Just a wonderful, all around great dog. Tessa is fully vetted and ready to bond to her new family.”

Seriously, when your dog wakes you too early in the morning, don’t you daydream just a little bit about waking the rascal each time you catch him or her taking a nap? Have you ever barked in your own dog’s ear? I’ve done it – she licks my face and goes back to sleep. Insomniacs can be bitter. ... I’m sitting here in Dallas with toes that are way too cold for the Lone Star State. Makes me really miss a nice hellish day in the cheap seats at the Ballpark in Arlington.
