Chicago is Worst City for Auto Repair

AutoMD.com Report Measures Affordability, Price Disparity Range and Shop Integrity

CARSON, Calif., Feb. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Chicago, Illinois ranked last overall in AutoMD.com's Advocacy for Repair Shop Fairness Report, the first study ever to analyze how the top-50 most populated U.S. cities stack up when it comes to providing consumers with fair quotes for auto repair. Chicago ranked 46th for Affordability, 30th for Price Disparity Range, and 50th for Shop Integrity. Memphis was ranked as the best city.

For the report, AutoMD.com mystery shoppers conducted a fairness check of over 600 shops in the top-50 DMAs* (including a range of dealers, independent shops, and franchises like Pep Boys) by requesting quotes on a typical auto repair job: a front brake replacement job for a Ford Focus. To measure pricing integrity, the mystery shoppers called back two weeks later with an industry standard price estimate. The best and worst list was then calculated based on each city's rankings for three critical factors, Repair Affordability, Price Disparity and Shop Integrity, weighted equally:

  1. Repair Affordability: Chicago ranked 46th among the top 50 US markets for the average price/cost-per-job – with an average quote of $226 for the repair. Miami ranked #1 for affordability with an average quote of $127 for the job.
  2. Price Disparity Range: Chicago ranked #30 when it came to the market's variance in quotes for the same job. For Chicago, quotes ranged from $150 to $425, representing a 183% variance. Long Beach, California ranked #1, with the lowest Price Disparity Range of the 50 cities tested.
  3. Shop Integrity Factor: Chicago ranked 50th for Shop Integrity, a measure of the percentage of shops that shifted their original quoted price by more than 5% when presented with an industry standard price estimate. One hundred percent of Chicago shops tested shifted their price. The top ranked city, Memphis, was number one for Shop Integrity.

With Chicago's poor marks in affordability, price disparity, and shop integrity, AutoMD.com recommends that Chicago residents compare shops to make sure they receive the best possible repair shop quote before setting foot into the repair shop.

Auto accident claims – all you need to know

There is a lot to consider when an accident happens; medical procedures and expenses, vehicle repairs, claims to deal with, repairmen at the repair shop and a lot more. Litigation may arise from another party who was involved.

When purchasing an automobile policy, ensure that you are familiar with the policy you have signed up for. An agreement between you and an auto insurance company is referred to as a policy. This provides coverage for you at a monthly installment, referred to as a premium.

You will receive your policy document or insurance agreement once you have signed a contract. This is a document containing Terms and Conditions pertaining to your policy and also any exclusions contained.

The Declarations Page of your policy is an integral part of your policy document as it has a list of the vehicles covered by your insurance policy, the drivers that are authorized to drive those vehicles and the insured driver’s portion of responsibility. Any ‘add-ons” and exclusions are also listed on this declarations document.

The policy-holder pays a monthly fee for coverage against losses and this is called an insurance premium.

The insured is sometimes called a policy holder and is included in the policy’s coverage. This also includes authorized drivers.

Losses or damage incurred could be property losses or damages, physical injuries, or similar damages or liabilities.

Losses incurred by another person could be covered by third party insurance coverage. These losses could include claims made for pain and suffering or other general losses. The third party insurance policy’s liability portion covers this, subject to limits of liability and excluding any punitive damages.

  • The third-party making a claim against the policy holder, is called a claimant.
  • A declaration of damages submitted to an insurance company, is called a claim.
  • The processing of claims due to damages is called a claims process.
  • One should familiarize oneself with the process of the claims procedure.

The first thing a policyholder should do is to submit a claim to the insurance company who will then assign a representative for processing the claim. They need to now determine and see that coverage is applicable to the claim received. If it is applicable, determined, the policyholder’s responsibility needs to be verified using statements from witnesses as well as car accident claim reports submitted.

Once a claims adjuster has reviewed the damages the company will pay out the claim.

We hopped in our car and gave chase, but lost our mark on the freeway. On Joe’s advisement, we pulled off the freeway to find the nearest phone booth and report our situation to our mob boss. The nearest phone booth popped up on our minimap and we pulled off the highway into Empire Bay’s Chinatown district. We located the phone booth but found it to be occupied by a shady-looking character on the phone. We could’ve patiently waited our turn, but couldn’t resist the option to yank the fellow out. Unfortunately, he didn’t appreciate our behavior and we found ourselves in another fistfight. We nearly lost that one, but landed a lucky hit that left the man face down in a pool of blood. But as it turns out, he was a Chinatown gangster whose nearby gun-toting buddy was cautiously observing the fight, and took it personally when we beat his pal down. Already wounded, we were faced with the option to either fight or flee, but a couple of the mobster’s gunshots made the decision for us, and plus gave us a chance to experience the game’s autosave system, which, on the bright side, bumped us back to right before the car chase.

Our second date through, we found a completely empty phone booth and called in our situation to our unsympathetic boss. Apparently, the cigarettes were worth a few thousand dollars, and those greasers had to pay, so we were directed to torch the rival gang’s watering gap, thereupon hunt them down and slap them around a little–no guns and no casualties, since our boss had been in the papers decent recently. We drove to an out-of-the-way part of town to find a roadside speakeasy where a group of heavies were already waiting to help us with the first part of our job. We hopped out on foot and were given a Tommy gun to shoot up the joint, tearing up the fragile wooden framework and shattering all the windows in loud, satisfying fashion while sending shards of glass everywhere courtesy of Mafia’s II’s implementation of PhysX physics. After shooting the place up, we next snagged some Molotov cocktails from the trunk of a nearby ally’s car and lobbed a few into the already-devastated diner until the whole place went up in a spectacular fiery explosion. The first part of our job completed, we hopped in our car to go hunting for greasers at the rival gang’s hangout.

After a quick drive down the road, we and our mob buddies broke into the gangsters’ hideout, swinging baseball bats and ready to rumble until the greasers pulled out their guns and started firing. With all bets off, we pulled out our own guns and started one of the game’s more intense gun battles. As we’ve mentioned in our previous coverage of the game, Mafia II’s shooting gameplay isn’t like the usual auto-aim-then-press-fire system you’ve come to expect from open-world games like Grand Theft Auto. Instead, 2K’s production team assures us that the development has taken lessons from popular third-person shooters like Gears of War 2 and Uncharted 2, and where appropriate, makes smart use of cover.

In that specific gun battle, cover was absolutely crucial. Our rivals had apparently holed up in an abandoned railway station–an open-air lot littered with abandoned freight and derelict sidecars. Though Joe and the rest of our mob compatriots were providing covering fire, it was absolutely crucial for us to gap up behind cover or risk becoming Swiss cheese. Luckily, Mafia II’s cover system seems elegant and easy adequate to use. You can take cover behind any solid object by pressing the action button, and from there, you can either peek out from cover to take potshots, seamlessly transition to the next nearest cover, or simply disengage from cover and come running out.
